On Composition
Before rewatching [Democracy] for my review, my mind had been buzzing with the many things I want–need to accomplish this week. But after watching, I just sat in silence for 20 minutes…. This is a true synthesis–not just a mashup or “crossover” exoticism–from someone exceedingly comfortable with both European art music and popular music.

“Barry Seroff’s compositions are a delight and always intriguing. He unabashedly takes on thorny thematic ideas with grace, intelligence, and a trace of whimsy. The result simultaneously hits you in the head and the body. Great stuff!”

“I could describe Seroff as a more “serious” Zappa: a gifted composer who sets up shop at the crossroads of serious composition, virtuosic performance, and nose-thumbing irreverence. His large-ensemble work strikes me as flirting with progressive rock but from the perspective of Stravinsky….. (his work) shows a real mastery of the craft of the composition and creative insight into making the piece work for the performers *and* the audience.”

Je ne savais d’ailleurs pas que l’on pouvait faire autant de choses avec une flute traversière. (I didn’t realize so much could be done with the flute).

On Lapis:
“Definitely jazz, but with a clear bent towards improvisation, it clearly will provide solace for those who love music that comes from the soul, rather than from rigid charts. What penetrates all the way through to your consciousness is the sheer joy they have in playing together… on “Solace”, they show (without doubt) that their skill at on-the-fly composition stands out well above others, & get their glee across to you.”
